Day 2: Galle Fort, Yala National Park

Leave 8.00 am Galle Fort 8.30-9.30. Galle is Sri-Lanka’s most historically interesting living city. Once the chief port of Sri-Lanka (then known as Ceylon), The Fort at Galle is a living World Heritage site and provides a glimpse of Sri Lanka’s Portuguese & Dutch heritage. Until the construction of the Colombo Harbor in the 19th century, Galle was the major port of Sri-Lanka and is still an active and major port today. It is believed that King Solomon obtained gems, spices, and tropical birds and wildlife from this port city.
The Galle Fort was built by the Portuguese in 1505 and later expanded by the Dutch in 1663. As the town of Galle outside the Fort bustles with life, inside the imposing walls of the Fort a much calmer atmosphere pervades taking visitors centuries back in time to the Dutch colonial era. The number of mammals that has been recorded from the park is 44, and it has one of the highest leopard densities in the world.
The area around Yala has hosted several ancient civilisations. Two important pilgrim sites, Sithulpahuwa and Magul Vihara, are situated within the park. The number of visitors has been on the rise since 2009 after the security situation in the park improved.

Also visit a spice garden and the Royal Botanical Gardens which were first built as a pleasure garden by a Sinhala king and later expanded by the British.

An amazing feat is the rock fortress of Sigiriya, where a prodigal prince hid after slaying his father, the king, and built a secret palace fortress where he hid for 30 years. And as this is one of Sri-Lanka’s driest areas, these industrious kings built enormous reservoirs and complicated irrigation systems to cultivate rice which are still used to this day.
