Drive from Colombo to Cultural Triangle (180km, 4hours).

This is the heart of the ancient civilizations in Sri-Lanka. During the golden age of civilization, the Sinhala kings, continually over-coming South-Indian invasion, built two magnificent cities; Anurdhapura and Polonnaruwa. They also paid homage to their strong sense of Buddhist culture by building temples and monasteries in Dambulla, Kurunegala and Yapahuwa. An amazing feat is the rock fortress of Sigiriya, where a prodigal prince hid after slaying his father, the then king, and built a secret palace fortress for 30 years! And as this is one of Sri-Lanka’s driest areas, these amazing kings built enormous reservoirs and complicated irrigation systems to cultivate rice which is still used to this day.

Explore the magnificent ancient cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa. Climb the 5th century Rock Fortress of Sigiriya famed for its beautiful frescoes and water fountains. And be amazed by the magnificent 7 cave rock temple at Dambulla. Learn about the ancient practice of medicine at the monastic hospital complex at Ritigala and Mihintale.

It is also home to Asia’s oldest golf course which the city is built around.

The Fort at Galle is a living World Heritage site and provides a glimpse of Sri Lanka’s Portuguese & Dutch heritage. Until the construction of the Colombo Harbor in the 19th century Galle was the major port of Sri-Lanka and is still an active and major port today. It is believed that King Solomon obtained gems, spices, and tropical birds and wildlife from this port city. As the town of Galle outside the Fort jostles with life, the imposing walls of the Fort envelopes a much calmer atmosphere and takes one a few centuries back to the Dutch colonial era. it is known for it beautifully intricate Handmade lace. The Galle Fort was built by the Portuguese in 1505 and later expanded by the Dutch in 1663.
